The Great North Run – Still Thriving at 45 Years

If you’re aiming to boost your fitness in 2024, consider participating in the Great North Run, the world’s largest half marathon. The 2024 edition is set for Sunday, September 8, in its original city of Newcastle and is open to anyone 17 years or older. Check out our high-quality Great North Run T-shirts for teams below:

Conceived by Olympic medalist Brendan Foster, the Great North Run kicked off its first race in 1981 with 12,000 runners joining what was initially a local fun run. Decades later, the event has grown massively, with over 54,000 participants making it a staple in the running community.

Entry spots are limited, so prompt action is essential. Although general entry might close months in advance, don’t be discouraged—you can still participate by running for a selected charity.

Visit the Great North Run’s official website for a list of partner charities who are offering race slots. Expect to commit to a minimum fundraising target; for example, Mind requires a £25 registration fee and a minimum of £300 in sponsorship, with half due before the race.

Famed for both its history and scenic route, the 13.1-mile course begins near the Royal Victoria Infirmary on Claremont Road, winds through Newcastle’s centre, crosses the iconic Tyne Bridge into Gateshead, and finishes with a spectacular seaside view in South Shields.

Explore the route more interactively here: Interactive Route Map. The atmosphere is electric, with spectators lining up to cheer, the Red Arrows soaring overhead, and live bands playing along the route. The experience is unforgettable, whether you’re an elite runner or a charity fundraiser.

You might spot celebrities and elite athletes alike. Notable figures like Mo Farah, Paula Radcliffe, and wheelchair athlete David Weir are often seen at the start. Local celebrities such as Sting, Bobby Robson, and Ant and Dec have historically participated in race starts.

To stand out, consider dressing up or wearing a personalised T-shirt that tells your story or shows your support. The Chronicle has a gallery of favourite costumes from past runs here: Chronicle’s Costume Gallery. Whether you opt for fancy dress or a custom-printed T-shirt, it’s a fun way to engage and create lasting memories.
